Top tips for visiting New Brunswick

Top Tip 1

• Miles of untouched coastline are waiting to be explored along the Bay of Fundy. This breathtaking destination is well-known for its incredible tides which experience some of the highest changes in the world. These are best explored at the Hopewell Rocks where you can walk around the famous “flowerpot rocks” at low tide then watch them disappear before you kayak in over 50 feet of seawater just a few hours later.

Top Tip 2

• Whilst high tides at the Bay of Fundy are remarkable, there are plenty of other things to do along this beautiful coast. The Bay is the feeding ground for over 12 species of whales which are attracted to the marine animals which populate the area. Embark on a daytime adventure and watch out for these incredible The Finback and Minke whales, the most endangered in the world. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for other animals too - bald eagles, harbour seals and porpoise are just a few of the creatures that you will see around the area.

Top Tip 3

• Enjoy a Shediac Lobster Tour! One for the seafood lovers, you can take a cruise out on the Atlantic to learn all about the coveted crustacean and how it is locally harvested. Haul your own lobster pot, get the down low on shell cracking and then settle down for a deliciously mouth watering lobster meal on the cruise boat.

Top Tip 4

• A visit to Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy is also a must. The largest of the Fundy Isles – its natural beauty attracts artists, photographers and geologists throughout the year. Even if you’re not a professional, the colourful lighthouses and quaint fishing villages provide eye-catching photo opportunities, as do the 240 species of bird that call this spot their home.

Top Tip 5

• Located on New Brunswick's eastern shore, you can easily spend an entire day in Kouchibouguac National Park. Walk along the sweeping sand dunes before swimming in some of the warmest salt water north of Virginia or canoeing along Kouchibouguac's waterways.

Top Tip 6

• Hike among more than 25 waterfalls in Fundy National Park or sit quietly and watch colourful fishing boats come and go all day long before relaxing in a heated saltwater swimming pool. Charming towns are never far from New Brunswick’s unspoilt wilderness, so be sure to walk 15 minutes outside of Fundy National Park to the small town of Alma and stop for a mouth-watering dessert at Kelly’s Bake Shop.

Top Tip 7

• New Brunswick offers wildlife in abundance. Whilst most people will only ever dream of seeing a wild black bear, these appealing creatures are common in Acadieville, a small rural community in Kouchibouguac National Park. Meet the ‘Bear Man’ - an experienced guide who will help you understand the communication calls used by these appealing creatures as you observe them in their natural habitat from the safety of an observation tower 26 feet above.

Top Tip 8

• St Andrews By-The-Sea is one of New Brunswick’s most popular towns and offers a unique shopping experience. Browse a wide selection of hand-crafted products created by local artisans whilst you stroll through streets which have scarcely changed in appearance since the 1800s. As you approach Prince William Street, enjoy a well-deserved break in Kingsbrae Garden – a 27-acre horticultural masterpiece which is recognised as one of Canada’s top ten public gardens.

Top Tip 9

• Your evenings out in New Brunswick will always be filled with warm Canadian hospitality. Whether you prefer home-cooked food or fine dining, New Brunswick caters to everyone’s tastes offering everything from winery tours to fresh fish from the Bay of Fundy. For seafood and steak lovers, a trip to Chez Charlotte in the picturesque village of Edmunston is a must. Alternatively, try something different and haul in your own lobster pots before sitting back and cruising along the pristine waters of Shediac Bay.

Top Tip 10

• New Brunswick is full of cultural diversity – from performing arts centres and art galleries to heritage sites and museums. Fredericton is the capital and cultural heart of New Brunswick and the Historic Garrison District is definitely worth a visit, located in the corner of Queen and Carleton Streets. Choose from a variety of concerts, theatre performances or participate in a jewellery making or pottery workshop – the perfect presents to bring home for friends and family.
