Halloween is just around the corner, and with a number of spooktacular events taking place across Canada, there’s a frightening amount of fun to be had.
If you have booked your flights to Toronto airport for the end of October, you will soon notice pumpkins donning doorsteps and costumes taking the place of business attire when you enter the city.
Toronto is one of the best places in the country to celebrate this spooky time of the year! Read on to find the must-visit Halloween festivals and attractions you need to head to this year.
After Dark Film Festival
Date: 12-20 October
Scare rating: 8/10. You will be peeking through your fingers for some films!

Imagine nine nights of horror, sci-fi, action and cult movies being played.
Well now you don’t have to as the 12th annual After Dark Film Festival is back and this year’s event will once again attract thousands of thrill-seekers to watch blood-curdling films.
There will be 20 different films being screened at the Scotiabank Theatre during the event and these include the highly acclaimed Poor Agnes, Battle Royale and the My Friend Dahmer films.
Halloween Haunt
Date: until 31 October
Scare rating: 9/10. Beware of maniacal clowns and evil pirate souls.
Canada’s Wonderland is full of fun and thrilling rides, but this month sees it transformed for Halloween Haunt and overtaken by 700 monsters.
This is the one season where you can experience the thrills of all your favourite rides as well as the chills of 20 scary haunted attractions and shows.
This year you can try and navigate your way through terrifying mazes and scare zones or watch a variety of live shows.
There are six scare zones in total. Carn Evil is where maniacal clowns cause chaos at the carnival. The brand-new Bloody Buccaneers scare zone is based on a wrecked ship and is where lost pirate souls are lurking.
Legends of Horror
Date: until 31 October
Scare rating: 7/10. Meet scary characters like the Phantom of the Opera and Dracula.
Legends of Horror at Casa Loma is a scary one-hour theatrical performance that includes all of the classic horror figures.
You will go on a 2 kilometre (around 1.2 miles) self-guided walk that will start in the lower gardens at Casa Loma before ending in the winding castle tunnels, which are open to the public for the first-time.
As you walk through the different specially-designed sets you will be introduced to a number of characters that are brought to life by over 70 actors and actresses.
Night of Dread at Dufferin Grove Park
Date: 28 October
The 18th annual Night of Dread at Dufferin Grove Park will once again be an evening of fearful pageantry.
If you’re planning a flight to Canada with children, then the family-friendly Night of Dread is a great place to visit before Halloween.
Torontonians come out to mock and banish their fears in a huge parade. In the parade you will see towering puppets, fire-spinners, monsters on stilts and lots more.
After the parade you will be able to enjoy live music and other performances from Captain Cowboy and the Money Maker, Richard Underhill & the Kensington Horns and the New Model Circus Army.
Screemers
Date: every weekend until 31 October
Screemers is rated by many as Toronto’s best haunted attraction and this year it is back to celebrate 25 years of terror at Exhibition Place.
There are lots of terrifying attractions and here are just a few you can enjoy:
- The Zombie Prizon – A power failure has compromised the security systems and now zombies are out for your blood.
- The Diabolical House of Cards – Enter into your worst nightmare in 3D as killer kings chase you through this house of cards.
- The Darkness – This frightening attraction takes you into a labyrinth and as you walk in complete darkness there are creatures out to get you.
Toronto’s Horror Hallways
Date: until 31 October
Scare rating: 9/10.
Think you’re not afraid of the dark? then exploring this never-ending maze of horror in a haunted house will put this to the test.
Toronto’s Horror Hallways features a range of insane horrors that’ll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. The pitch-black hallways and demons lurking around every corner mean that the attraction is not recommended for young children.
Monster Dash
Date: 29 October
Scare rating: 6/10. Toronto’s biggest Halloween run is full of people in scary fancy dress.
The Toronto Monster Dash is a unique event where you can run alongside costumed ghouls, ghosts and goblins.
This Halloween run, which supports the Ontario Science Centre’s Community Access Programs, takes place at night and consists of a Spooky Mile, 5km and 10km run/walk. Along the route there are some spooky surprises like the Zombie Zone and the Cemetery of Dead Races that are sure to make you speed up!
Most runners will come dressed in Halloween costumes to be in with a chance of winning a prize for the best dressed!
Haunted High Park
Date: 19 October
Scare rating: 7/10. Haunted walks and chilling tales will keep you on edge.
Toronto’s High Park will transform after dark as you can discover the ghostly tales that have been spooking visitors for years.
This year’s Haunted High Park event will feature Victorian funeral and mourning traditions in the historic Colborne Lodge and there will be lots of haunted walks. These walks will be enhanced by Doc Wuthergloom of Eldritch Theatre, who will be presenting each one.
Ghost Ship Toronto
Date: 29 October
Scare rating: 6/10. Although the costumes will be scary, your evening will be filled with fun.
The Ghost Ship Toronto will sail onto Lake Ontario this Halloween for the spookiest boat party in the city.
The Halloween party will boast three levels of partying with club music, drinks, appetizers and costume contests all making a great Halloween concoction.
The boat will cruise down the coast of downtown Toronto as revellers embrace the spooky spirit of Halloween.
